She was reared in Detroit, Michigan, after being born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee.

When she was young, she started singing gospel music at her father's church, and by the time she was 18, she had already signed her first recording deal with J.V.B. Records.

Gospel music dominated Franklin's early career, and throughout the 1950s and 1960s, she released a number of gospel recordings.
